ADT Fire & Security installs video surveillance and fire detection solutions in the Luís Simões Logistics Operating Centre of the Future
03 June 2009

Solutions are designed to provide protection 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

ADT Fire & Security, Europe’s leading provider of electronic security and fire protection solutions, was contracted to provide a video surveillance (CCTV) and fire detection system in the recently opened “Logistics Operating Centre of the Future” of the Luís Simões company, in Carregado. The new Luís Simões warehouse operates automatically, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It has an area of 20,000m2 and has a 56,000 pallet capacity processing 600 pallets per hour in/out of the warehouse. “The Logistics Operating Centre of the Future” has been created to meet the requirements of large customers in the major retail sectors of food and non-food, without temperature control.

The video surveillance (CCTV) system installed by ADT Fire & Security is managed by the Intellex® digital video system, which collects images from more than 88 fixed position cameras deployed in strategic locations throughout the logistics centre. The collation of images for viewing is performed using a virtual matrix. The matrix can be remotely accessed using the Intellex® Network Client software. The access levels of its 20 users are managed and policed by the Intellex® Policy Manager, security software that encompasses 18 Intellex® systems installed in different Luís Simões warehouses throughout Portugal.

The Minerva MX technology addressable fire detection system has been supplemented by a very early warning aspirating system, necessary to deal with the size and type of occupancy existing in the logistics centre, in particular the centre’s indoor height of 19 metres and six levels of pallet racks. This solution detects fire through the analysis of air that is constantly collected at various collection points throughout the 1,140 metres of piping and at various heights amongst the pallet racks, which provides for the very early and instantaneous detection of a fire. The fire alarm can be programmed to activate when defined smoke concentrations are exceeded.

The system also comprises, 240 optical detectors, 29 manual activation alarm buttons, 18 fire alarm sirens, 30 data collection interfaces and 42 controllers to perform actions such as opening /closing doors or disconnecting electrical systems. The main fire detection control panels use Minerva MX technology, with two MX4000 panels and one MXR repeater panel at the gatehouse.

“We have selected ADT Fire & Security because it operates throughout various stages of the value chain, from the manufacture through to installation and maintenance, and also due to the flexibility and integration capacity that the solution provides. Our aim is to have the support of a team that instils confidence, operating at 100% 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. ADT Fire & Security plays an important and integral role in the quality of the service that we provide our clients”, states Paulo Alves, Head of Procurement and Auditing of Information Systems at Luís Simões.

“ADT Fire & Security is very proud to continue to be Luís Simões’ security partner, and this partnership is strengthened through the supply of security and fire protection solutions for the new centre. I believe that our experience as well as the range of products and solutions and reputation of our brands will contribute to the continuation of a fruitful partnership between ADT Fire & Security and Luís Simões”, states João Ribeiro, Managing Director of ADT Fire & Security.
