ADT Offices Embark on Treasure Hunts to Help Save Energy

With the aim of identifying opportunities to reduce our energy wastes and increase our positive environmental impact, during Q2 and Q3 our local Vital World teams embarked on four new Treasure Hunts in our offices in Ratingen, Milan and Capelle, and our Mostoles Warehouse in Madrid.

Including the Treasure Hunt that took place in the Madrid office last December, five locations have now been touched by the environmental breeze of the Zero Harm programme. More than 45 enthusiastic and committed volunteers scanned our facilities to identify Energy Treasures.

They found more than 360 screens and 140 printers in stand-by mode during non working hours. Although these devices are designed to save energy, they generate more than 8000 KWh per year - equivalent to 2 Tons of CO2 emission. The Treasure Hunters also identified opportunities to reduce the CO2 emissions in our facilities by implementing small changes such as swapping from halogen to fluorescent or LED bulbs, switching off the vending machine lights during non-working hours and adjusting the temperature and timing of water heaters.

All Vital World teams are working with our senior management to translate these opportunities into a consistent plan to reduce CO2 emissions in our facilities.

Our contribution and commitment to this plan is crucial. Changing the way we consume energy, not only in the office but also at home, can make a huge difference in energy saving. A Treasure Hunt Day will take place at the end of Q4 and volunteers will have the opportunity to help save energy in our smaller offices. Details coming soon!

Spanish Employees Promote Healthy Lifestyle Through Health and Wellness Activities

In line with Tyco’s efforts to build an engaging and healthy work environment and have an impact on the quality of our employees’ lives, our colleagues in ADT Spain organised four Health and Wellness activities during Q2 and Q3. Leading a healthy lifestyle can help you avoid many chronic and life-threatening illnesses and improve your work performance.

With that in mind, the health and safety activities were designed to increase the employees’ awareness on these matters and offer them tips on improving their wellbeing. The activities included:

  • A breakfast seminar on “Food and Nutritional Advice and Best Practices”. The first session took place on 21st February and was conducted by an external nutritional expert. It was followed by a second session on 28th February.
  • An Eye Care Campaign, a free campaign to help prevent eye-sight problems. Four sessions took place in February – three in Las Rozas and one in our Monitoring Center Station.
  • Emergency Coordinators Training, a new initiative to improve awareness on what actions to take in case of an emergency. On the 9th and 15th March, a selected group of workers from all areas participated in a practical session where they had to prove their knowledge on safety and extinguish a real fire. Also, a great exercise to improve team work.
  • Child Camp, a family day that took place on 25thFebruary in Las Rozas, to help employees balance family and work life.
  • A healthy back workshop on 12th May to teach employees how to improve their posture at work (when using the computer, driving or lifting heavy materials) in order to have a strong, healthy back and prevent injury.

Tyco encourages our employees to follow Spain’s example and participate in local programmes, become wellness champions and start their own wellness committee, if one doesn’t exist at their location. If you consider leading a regional or local network of wellness champions, please send an e-mail to yourhealthemea@tycoint.com We are confident you will actively engage in and support Tyco’s global health and wellness agenda.

ADT Germany Save More Than Two Tons of CO2 by Using Special Mail Service

We are proud to announce that ADT Germany managed to save 2,282t of CO2 in 2010 by using the GOGREEN services and products of Deutsche Post DHL, the world’s leading mail and logistics group.

GOGREEN is a carbon-neutral shipping service, whereby the CO2 emissions generated during the transportation and handling of Deutsche Post DHL’s customers’ shipments are measured and offset through climate protection projects. The service, piloted in 2005, was available in 39 countries in 2010 and offset around 82,000 tons of CO2 for their customers. Well done Germany!

This is a great example of supporting Tyco’s efforts to promote a greener future for everyone, everywhere.

Photographers of the Earth

The Vital World team in Italy celebrated the arrival of summer with a photography competition themed "Become Photographer of the Earth for one day”, to remind employees our commitment to the planet.

Employees were asked to submit photos of nature and the response was overwhelming.

On 24 of June, the winners of the competition, Adriana Fantin, Marco Augusto Sighinolfi and Gabriele Frigerio, received their awards and congratulations in the presence of all employees.

Their pictures were displayed on video at the reception, where they were visible to everyone. Well done to our Italian colleagues for organising and taking part in this initiative.

Tyco Partners With Humanitarian Organisation on Clean Water Initiative

Partnering with the international humanitarian organisation Action Against Hunger (ACF), Tyco are launching a programme called the Clean Water Access Initiative (CWAI) to deliver clean water to people threatened by malnutrition and water-borne diseases.

Tyco has committed more than $2 million in resources over the next three years to the partnership. That includes funding for selected water projects, as well as emergency funds to enable ACF to respond quickly to natural disasters where access to clean water and sanitation are critical to humanitarian relief efforts. What truly makes this partnership significant is that ACF will involve Tyco’s people, products and services to achieve greater impact in providing sustainable clean water solutions in developing communities.

Tyco will kick off this partnership in Indonesia’s NTT Province later this summer, where limited access to clean water is a major contributing factor to poor health and malnutrition. Our project will bring ACF together with local teams to construct new water systems to improve access to safe water for 40,000 people.

In addition, we will devote resources toward an educational programme to improve local hygiene practices, train local authorities on the design and maintenance of water supply infrastructures, and monitor the sustainability of the water system.

Tyco are confident the CWAI will become a model programme – demonstrating how a strategic partnership can leverage Tyco’s people, products and funding to address a pressing global issue.

ADT CE Celebrates Earth Day 2011

In April, ADT and Tyco employees across the world joined forces to celebrate Earth Day in order to raise awareness of climate change and support our efforts to build a sustainable environment. Earth Day activities took place throughout the week of 18th April to 22nd as part of Vital World.

Earth Day is a special event which has been celebrated for the last 40 years around the world, with millions of people taking part. It’s an opportunity not just for individuals, but also businesses and governments to join together and create a global green economy. In the last two years, Tyco employees have done a great job celebrating the day through local activities in ADT and Tyco offices.

Here you can find out how the day was celebrated in Continental Europe.

Spain - Help prevent damage to the environment

There was a ‘No Printing Day’ where all printers in the office were turned off to encourage more responsible use of paper. The employees were also discouraged from using the lifts to adopt a more eco-friendly use of electricity. They also participated in a team activity to plant flowers in the garden of the Las Rozas office to make their premises more sustainable. On 19th April, employees brought their children to Las Rozas and then visited a farm nearby to take part in a botanical workshop.

Benelux – Promote and reward environmentally conscious and socially responsible behaviours

Every day of the week had its own theme, which was reinforced by sending out emails with tips and general information on responsible living and consuming. To increase engagement and participation, on the last day every colleague was asked to send their best advice on healthy living and saving the environment.

The winner Bart-Jan Coolen, Product Manager Integrated Solutions, who offered the most original and financially interesting advice, was rewarded with a basket filled with fair trade products.

Italy – Save energy and respect the nature

ADT Italy organised activities such as collecting drawings of employees’ children, a Treasure hunt for energy saving and asking employees to submit photos of the nature they had taken in the leisure time.

In addition, all office lights were switched off during lunchtime and a film of the nature was shown in the reception area. Finally, all printers were set in black & white printing for the day. Congratulations to all employees who participated so enthusiastically in the Earth Day Celebration activities.

You have demonstrated how every person can do something towards building a sustainable environment.
